{Home Decor} How I decorate my Living Room

Ken and I have been living in our little apartment for over a year now. It’s nothing special by any means {other than being fairly cheap}, but we’ve managed to give it that “home-y” feel. Just take a look at these before and after photos– the before was taken the first week we moved in {September 2010} and the after photo was taken this evening.

Before: Look at our tiny TV… it didn’t even have a stand thing {Ken lost it}! We actually didn’t even have a TV bench so we had to use our coffee table from Ikea. And our poor curtains! We didn’t have lamps either. But at least our floor was shiny, right? lol.

After: A few pictures on the walls and a brand new TV, TV bench, chair, curtains, lamps, floor mat etc. Most of this stuff was bought over the months, bit by bit. Looking pretty cozy, huh?

Most of our furniture and decor actually comes from Wal-mart orĀ  Ikea. I wish I could shop at Bombay, but let’s be realistic: I’m a student on a tight budget :P

Curtains: Brown ones {Zellers}, white ones {Ikea}

End tables and coffee table: Ikea

Futon: Wal-mart

Picture: Wal-mart

Birds Decor: Bed, Bath, and Beyond

Lamps: Ikea

Floor mat: Wal-mart

One of my favourite pieces is this vase with flowers that light up {Bed, Bath, and Beyond}:

Earlier this week, I made a trip to Ikea. I’ve been wanting an armchair for a while now, so I finally got one. It was pretty cheap {$149} so I ended up getting a plant stand too {$29}.

I basically love everything at Ikea, especially the decor/candles section. Check out this blue vase {$9.99} and single flower {$0.99} I bought. It matches the super soft quilt that hangs over the armchair {$24.99 at Winners}.

Although this isn’t part of my living room, I just wanted to show you how I decorated my kitchen table. Initially, I just had the two candles sitting on the table. However, I found this dinner tray thing while browsing at Winners {$9.99} which I thought would look nice…

Ice Skating on the Rideau Canal

Yesterday, I did something very exciting… I went ice-skating on the Rideau Canal for the very first time! For those of you who are unfamiliar with Ottawa, the Rideau Canalis a National Historic Site of Canada {and a UNESCO World Heritage Site} that runs through the city. Every year, the canal is open for people to skate on! EEEEEE!!!

Ken skating :)

The skateway is 7.8 kilometres long– Meaning, this is the world’s largest skating rink! How cool is that? They even have places– on the ice– where you can buy hot chocolate, beavertails, etc!

Ken and I both had a beavertail and hot chocolate {with marshmellos<3}

About to skate backwards… I think?

BEAVER TAIL + hot chocolate! Best thing ever invented, you guys!

Ken<3

Myself again… check out my Canada mitts ;)

It was such an interesting day! And guess what? I didn’t fall down ;) Hehe. I haven’t been skating in 5-6 years, so this surprises me. Random fact though: When I was younger, I was in figure skating. I think from the age of 4 to 13-14! Goddd, I miss it.

But anyway, I can’t wait to go back on Thursday!

New Things Shopping

New {Aldo} Wallet

As I mentioned last week, I bought a new wallet from Aldo Accessories not too long ago. I needed a new one badly– well actually, to be honest, I haven’t been using a wallet for over a year now! Uh huh, that’s right… over a year. I was using a little coin purse {I guess that’s what you would call it?} from Coach. It was getting rather annoying though. I need my cards, cash, and coin separated! :3

Purple wallet: Aldo Accessories {$25}

Hope everyone is having a fabulous weekend! :) XO.

Hey 2012, this is what I expect from you ;)

I usually don’t do the whole New Year’s resolutions thing. I rarely ever keep them, so why do it? Haha. I do have goals for 2012, but they are not the kind that starts on January 1ST and end on December 31ST, lol. Without further adieu, let me share a few expectations/goals I have for 2012. I’ve also posted a few photos of my NYE spread and New Year’s day dinner ;)

Our little New Year’s Day dinner :)

  • I expect to be a much healthier person in 2012. For me, this doesn’t mean going to the gym 5x a week, eating healthy, etc. for the whole year. I plan on going to the gym when I can {I’m aiming for 3X a week – 1 hour, 20 minutes each time}, drinking 3-5 glasses of water a day {I’ve been doing this a lot lately}, and just avoiding take-out {I’m actually pretty good with this now}.
  • I expect to have completed my M.A degree by June. I swear to God, I am going to be one grumpy girl if I have to go through the summer semester and not convocate until October. The ball is in my court though. I just have to write my thesis and I’m done… let’s see if I can do it in time @__@

  • I expect to have a job of some sort. Full-time “big girl” job or part-time shit job, I don’t care. I just need a job by May or June. I plan on taking a year off from school {to prepare for law school and phD applications}, so I’ll need money to actually live here.
  • I expect to be in Ottawa. I love Ottawa and so does Ken. I don’t want to move back to Newfoundland or anywhere else, so we are doing all that we can to stay here… which is directly linked to the need-to-find-a-job thing ;)

  • I expect to pay off most of my credit card debt. Ugggh. This one will probably be the hardest for me since A) I’m broke, B) I love to shop a little too much. But paying off my huge credit card bills is something I have to do this year. They are outrageous and have been haunting me for years now. I plan on using some of my money {from university} to pay `em off.

  • I will try new recipes for dinner and not stick to the norm. I’ve already been doing this lately and just received a new cookbook for Christmas, so this shouldn’t be too difficult.
  • I want to buy a chair and new futon for the apartment. Our current futon is pretty much ready for the garbage and we need more “sitting space” in our little living room. Ken and I have been talking about buying two new pieces of furniture for a while, so I think we will be doing this next month. It won’t hurt our budget either… yanno, since we will be shopping at Wal-mart and Ikea ;)

  • I want to write down my thoughts more often. In Russia, I wrote in a travel journal daily. It really helped me relieve some of my frustrations and document super-cool moments. I already blog here, but I would like to buy a notebook and just jot down a few things every once in a while.

Questions: What are your expectations for 2012?

Daily Life New Things Relationships Russia

A tribute to 2011

For me, 2011 was a year of surprises, a year of growth, and a year of love. In the first week of 2011, I started my second semester {of year one} of graduate school. After battling a series of “oh, I’m way too stupid for grad school” thoughts the semester prior, I finally felt a little more confident in my work and abilities. After spending four months in a new city {a new province!}, I felt more comfortable. I knew where things were and I was starting to like Ottawa a lot. What else happened in 2011? Well…

I traveled to the United States for the very first time. This trip included many firsts: first time in Florida, first time swimming in a warm ocean, and lastly, it was my first time visiting Disney World! Haha yes, at the age of 24 :3

I traveled to Russia and lived there for two months. This was probably the biggest surprise of 2011 since I ended up getting funded by my university to go there. Not only did I experience a totally different culture, language, and cuisine, but I also made several new friends and got to visit Moscow for a weekend. Ahhh, red square <3.

Red Square, Moscow, Russia

I spent a week in London, UK. After leaving Russia {and before I departed for Canada}, I decided to spend a week in London. I got to see all of my favourite museums again, walk through my favourite parks, and shop on Oxford Street. My good friend– from Australia– ended up meeting me in London before she also departed for Canada. I really enjoyed everything about that week!

Me, feeding a squirrel chocolate {oops!} in London

I got engaged! Spending two months in Russia did not take a toll on my relationship at all. Actually, it made it much stronger. I think we both ended up growing a lot– as individuals and as a couple– during the summer. On October 18, Ken asked me to, you know, marry him *gush*, lol.

Ahhh, 2011– you were a good year! I am praying that 2012 will be similar ;) …No ph meters needed :P
